Family behind 1873 Bar & Grill

Our Story – Why 1873 Bar & Grill

When Casey and Steph decided to create 1873 Bar & Grill, it wasn’t just about opening a restaurant – it was about building a place for everyone to feel at home. As a blended family with eight kids, we know how hard it can be to find a spot where parents, grandparents, kids, and friends can all enjoy themselves together. We remember the times when taking the kids out felt like too much, or when we wanted a fun night as a couple, or just a place to laugh with friends. We wanted one place that could do it all – and that’s what 1873 is all about.

Our family reflects a little bit of everything. Our oldest son Caleb is traveling the country as a Broadway actor, another son is thriving in his dream career after college, our daughter is chasing her passion for music, our teenage daughter is involved in everything she can be, and our four youngest boys (9, 10, 11, and 12) keep us on our toes every day. With a family like ours, we know what it means to need variety, flexibility, and fun. That’s why we built 1873 to be a hangout spot that works for everyone.

Here, kids can play games while adults relax with great food, friends can gather for sports and good drinks, women can enjoy a fun ladies’ night, and couples can connect over live music and entertainment. We believe in honoring our community too – nurses, teachers, police officers, and first responders always receive our appreciation and discounts.

Steph brings her heart for kids from her work leading a pediatric unit, and Casey brings his experience as an executive leader – together, we’ve combined our passions for people, community, and music to create a place that feels like family. 1873 Bar & Grill is more than just a restaurant – it’s your spot for food, fun, and a darn good time.

Our Legacy

Rooted in History

Our story begins with the very bricks and mortar of our historic building, which has stood as a silent witness to the town's evolution since 1873.

For over a century, this corner in downtown Portage has been a place for conversation and good company. When we established the 1873 Bar & Grill, our mission was simple: to honor that legacy and create a modern gathering spot where everyone feels welcome. We're proud to be the place for "Food, Family & a Darn Good Time."
